right thats true...they are the "perfect princess examples" , it wouldnt feel right to have a princess like for example kida: shes a heroine but atlantis is more of an action movie than princessy story

But then again, she is also seen as a princess in her own right, just in a different way

In the end, it all really comes down to popularity. Tink, though technically not a Princess, gets more publicity than even Jasmine and is often grouped in with the Princesses. Disneyland's Walt Disney's Parade of Dreams for the 50th Anniversary doesn't have Jasmine at all, but the other 5 Princesses are there. And while Jasmine and Aladdin are in the Christmas Fantasy Parade, they are not a part of the royal ball like the other 5. While other characters can be considered or may actually be Princesses, they don't receive Disney's royal treatment because they don't have the staying power that the main 5 do. And a lot of that comes from their stories. Aurora, Belle, Cinderella, and Snow White come from beloved fairy tales. While Ariel's original version is depressing, the Disney treatment made it into a story like the others. I don't include Jasmine here in part because she's a secondary player in her movie. I don't think her character is as well developed as other Disney heroines, both before and after Aladdin. Nevertheless, she is popular enough that she makes it to most of the merchandise. I also wonder if our perspective is influenced by the area in which we live. For example, my guess is that Mulan receives far more attention in Asia than she does in Europe and North America. It wouldn't surprise me if she dwarfs the Princesses in terms of merchandise and popularity in that part of the world. Animal heroines aren't included because most little girls don't dream of being swept off their feet by a lion or a bug. And the others don't receive Disney's royal treatment because they don't make a lot of money for the company so while they have their wonderful qualities and devoted fans, Disney markets the others more because Disney makes more money off of them.

Why do they include Tink as a princess? She's not a princess, she's a fairy.

That's probably why Disney decided to start making Disney Fairy merchandise!!!

I like Tinkerbell but she's not a princess so it's good that they are coming up w/ more fairies to put her in that group

I'm making a list, as my flute section needs a theme for spirit day; so far I have: Jasmine, Belle, Aurora, Snow White, Ariel, Cinderella, Tinker Belle, Pocahontas, Mulan, Maid Marion, Esmerelda, Meg, Nala, Mia (princess diaries, does that count?) and Kida. Who else can I count in, and what movie are they from?
