Allan Sniffen was posted on the NYRMB about the sale of ABC Radio properties:
Disney can't get out of radio fast enough as far as I'm concerned. The only unfortunate thing is that, apparently, they plan on keeping "Radio Disney" and "ESPN Radio". Translated that means 1050 ESPN Radio will continue to lag WFAN thanks to the required Bristol demanded network programming and 1560 will remain, well, you know what.
But... For New York:
1. WPLJ should improve. Scott Shannon and company haven't been able to be as aggressive as they have needed to be. Even the format itself is an example of compromise and concern about corporate image. Whether it be Entercom, Emmis, Cumulus or someone else, at least it will be a radio company who understands you have to take the gloves off in a market full of similarly programmed demo specific FM stations. You've got to stand out somehow.
2. WABC can stop having to walk that fine line between politically correct and aggressive talk. Bob Grant was let go thanks to Disney pressure and the station's programming since has had to constantly balance edgy talk vs. image. Again, take the gloves off.
Disney should never have been in radio in the first place given the company's understandable concern about public image. The consequence of handcuffing its stations wasn't good for anyone.
Any thoughts?
